Mike Phillips has quashed fears about his fitness by making himself available to represent Wales in their upcoming Six Nations clash against France. The Lions scrum-half insists he is ready for the Millennium Stadium clash on Friday evening despite playing just 40 minutes of competitive rugby since October. Phillips has been missing for four months after tearing ankle ligaments in Ospreys' Heineken Cup clash against Clermont Auvergne. But after featuring in Ospreys' win over Connacht on Sunday after he had come off the bench for the second half, he is the surprise inclusion in Warren Gatland's side. He said: "I'm very confident in my fitness and just really excited to be back in the squad and can't wait to be a part of it again. I'm just chuffed to be part of the squad and, if I'm called upon, I'm going to give it 110 per cent." Despite his lack of game time recently, the 27-year-old has admitted he would never put himself forward if he wasn't fit. "I wouldn't put myself in this position to be honest," he added. "I was available the week before last as well. So I've had a big conditioning block the last four or five weeks." |
