Third-placed Giants cruise to win

18:27 - 13th, Sep 2009

Leroy Cudjoe scored a hat-trick of tries as Huddersfield Giants clinched third place in the Super League table by thrashing Wigan Warriors 48-16 at the Galpharm Stadium.

The Giants will now face second-placed St Helens in the first week of the play-offs after crossing for eight tries against a Warriors team that finished the regular season sixth to set up a home clash with Castleford Tigers.

Shaun Lunt crossed twice for Huddersfield while David Hodgson, Paul Whatuira and Brett Hodgson also scored tries. The impressive Hodgson also kicked eight goals.

Castleford endured an anxious afternoon at The Jungle before eventually beating rock-bottom Celtic Crusaders 35-22.

The Welsh visitors led 16-14 at the break and it was still 22-22 midway through the second half.

But Michael Shenton then scored his second try of the game and Brent Sherwin's drop goal calmed Tigers fans' nerves before Craig Huby's late try sealed victory.

Challenge Cup winners Warrington Wolves may not be featuring in the play-offs, but at least they ended their season in style by beating Harlequins in a 78-point thriller.

It was 16-16 at half-time but, despite Luke Dorn grabbing a hat-trick of tries for Quins, Tony Smith's side eventually won out 44-34 as they clinched their 12th victory of the campaign.
