St Helens secure top spot

08:56 - 10th, Apr 2009

St Helens are the new Super League leaders after a hard-fought 18-12 victory over Wigan Warriors.

Wigan were much-improved from their dismal early season performances but were undone by two quick-fire tries midway through the second period.

Matt Gidley and Leon Pryce crossed in quick succession around the hour-mark to secure the win for Saints.

Wigan had led 12-6 after 55 minutes following two tries from Shaun Ainscough and two Amos Roberts goals.

But the two-try blitz and a late drop goal from Kyle Eastmond saw Saints leapfrog Leeds Rhinos at the top of the table.
