Premier League clubs spent a combined £70.6million on agents' fees during the 12 months leading up to September. In a move which mirrors the Football League, the top-flight has decided to make public the amount its 20 member clubs paid to agents during the period between October 2008-September 2009. Unsurprisingly, Manchester City have been revealed as the biggest spenders. The Eastlands club paid more than £12million to agents as part of the deals to bring Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Joleon Lescott, Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz to the ambitious club. Next on the list are Chelsea after they splashed out £9.5million on fees, with Liverpool third (£6.7million) and Tottenham fourth (£6.1million). Meanwhile, Premier League champions Manchester United spent a paltry £1.5million in comparison. Burnley, who have only been in the top-flight for a matter of months, spent just £468,000 and were bottom of the pile. "We are pleased that, through these new requirements, clubs are bringing greater transparency to the domestic transfer market," commented a Football Association spokesperson. "For the first time, there will be a game-wide picture of the level of spending on agents. "The leagues and other key stakeholders have been fully supportive, following the example set by the Football League with its publication of agents' fees over the last few years." |
