Boateng handed Germany call

15:28 - 2nd, Oct 2009

Hamburg defender Jerome Boateng has been named in Germany's squad for the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Russia and Finland.

The 21-year-old has yet to feature for the senior national team, but has impressed coach Joachim Low with his recent performances.

"He has played very well in different positions for Hamburg this season, whether it be at the centre of the defence or as a full-back, or even as a defensive midfielder," Low commented.

"Furthermore, he made a great impression in the European Under-21 Championship triumph.

"Therefore, it is only logical that he should take the next step with the national team.

"One of his strengths is that he is very versatile in the defence and has a lot of potential."

Meanwhile, Bochum midfielder Mimoun Azaouagh has pledged his international future to Morocco.

The 26-year-old is a former Germany Under-21 international, but has opted to try his hand with the land of his birth.

He told Sport Bild: "Yes, it is right. I would like to play for Morocco.

"The coach (Hassan Moumen) has convinced me. Everything will now be arranged."
