Stalemate suits Smith

08:11 - 24th, Oct 2007

Rangers manager Walter Smith was extremely pleased to take a point from Tuesday's Champions League clash with Barcelona at Ibrox as his side continued their fine form in Group E.

Although the Catalan giants dominated possession, the goalless draw ensures both sides remain favourites to qualify from a group that also contains Lyon and Stuttgart.

Smith told the Gers' official website: "We're delighted with the result.

"I felt we defended very well throughout the 90 minutes and we were forced to do so by an excellent Barcelona team.

"But the boys did fantastically well to keep their concentration and I have to give them a lot of credit for that.

"We can't say that we had many clear-cut chances but we knew that would be the case.

"I said to the players this morning that we were going to have to defend very well but any team in the world would have to do that.

"But if you look at the game our midfielders had to help out in a defensive sense and trying to get forward which was always going to be hard.

"I also have to praise Daniel Cousin as I felt sorry for him at times. It is a hard shift up there on his own but he did very well for us and overall I am very pleased."
