Jonathan Trott hailed the strength in depth of the England squad after they shrugged off a number of injury problems to defeat South Africa A in their final warm-up game. The injury-plagued tourists were down to the bare bones in Potchefstroom with only 11 players deemed fit enough to take part in the final practice before the first one-day international against South Africa on Friday. Bowlers James Anderson (knee), Stuart Broad (shoulder) and Graeme Swann (side strain) were joined on the sidelines by opening batsman Alastair Cook and all-rounder Paul Collingwood (both back). However, a knock of 74 from Trott, 65 from skipper Andrew Strauss and wicketkeeper Matt Prior's 54 saw them reach the 279-9 target with 11 balls to spare. "It just goes to show how strong our squad is," said Trott. "If anybody is called upon it just goes to show that whoever it is, they can do a job for the side." Speaking about the batting effort, he added: "I think it was a nicely measured innings from us. "Andrew Strauss set it up nicely at the beginning and along with Joe
Denly gave us a good start. "I then came in and sort of got going. There was then a little period where the guys came in, getting themselves in and then getting themselves out unfortunately. "But Matt Prior came in and played an awesome innings. I just batted around him and then Luke Wright came in and played his part, the way we know he can, and we got ourselves home." Meanwhile, Durham seamer Liam Plunkett has been called up to the squad as cover for the first two ODIs. |
